Your Navien Is Talking to You. Here's How to Understand What It's Saying.
An "E" code just appeared on your Navien's front panel — maybe with a cold shower as its opening act. You want three answers: What does it mean? Is it serious? What happens next?
You're in the right place. This guide is built from Navien's own official documentation — the NPE installation manual and the factory service manual's error code tables — not copied from other websites. That distinction matters more for Navien than almost any brand: while researching this guide, we found popular third-party sites publishing definitions that flatly contradict Navien's own service manual (one widely-copied site calls E110 an "auto feeder valve" problem; Navien's official table says it's an exhaust blockage — a difference that matters a great deal when combustion exhaust is the subject).
We are THE Water Heater Company: Navien Service Specialists — Navien's designation for its authorized service providers — and a Navien installer. Navien is one of our three installed brands, with three locations across Southern California — Camarillo, Van Nuys, and Santa Ana — serving Ventura County, Los Angeles County, Orange County, and the City of Santa Barbara. Our certified technicians install and service these exact units every day.
⚠️ A Critical Safety Warning Before You Read Any Further
Navien tankless water heaters are sophisticated systems sitting at the intersection of four potentially dangerous forces:
1. Natural Gas or Propane — Navien's manual leads with it: if you smell gas, do not try to light any appliance, do not touch electrical switches or use landline phones. From a neighbor's phone, call your gas provider and follow their instructions; if you can't reach them, call the fire department. And remember that flammable vapors are heavier than air and "can travel long distances along the ground" — Navien's words.
2. High-Voltage Electricity — Navien's manual warns directly: do not remove the front cover unless power is off or disconnected, and never touch the power cord or internal components with wet hands. The control board, fan motor, and ignition transformer inside all carry live current.
3. Scalding-Hot Water — Navien publishes a scald table worth respecting: at 140°F, a young child can suffer a full-thickness third-degree burn in one second. The factory setting is 120°F for a reason.
4. Combustion Exhaust — Navien units are Category IV appliances with positive-pressure venting, and the manual is blunt: improper venting "can result in excessive levels of carbon monoxide and can lead to serious injury or death." Even the condensate carries a warning — it's acidic (pH 3–5), the trap must be kept filled, and it should never be consumed.
This is why Navien error codes should be diagnosed and repaired by a licensed, trained professional — and Navien's own installation manual repeats "licensed professional" and "qualified installer" at nearly every consequential step, from gas connections to venting to the pressure relief valve.
This guide helps you understand what your unit is saying — it is not a repair manual. Knowing what a diagnosis means is valuable; performing the procedure is a different job.

First: Which Navien Generation Do You Have?
Navien's NPE platform has two major generations, and it changes what your unit can tell you:
- NPE-A / NPE-S (first generation) — the units that made Navien a fixture of Southern California construction.
- NPE-A2 / NPE-S2 ("NPE-2," current generation) — same platform, smarter self-diagnostics. Two error codes exist only on this generation, because the hardware behind them didn't exist before: E762 (Vent Installation Detector) and E773 (gas-type discrepancy detection). The "A2" models also carry the built-in ComfortFlow® recirculation system — pump and buffer tank inside the cabinet — which "S2" models don't have.
Your model number is on the rating plate on the side of the unit (NPE-240A2, NPE-210S2, and so on). When you call, read it to us along with the code — the same number means the most precise answer when we know exactly which unit is displaying it.
One more modern-generation note: if your unit has the optional NaviLink® Wi-Fi system, you can monitor and control it from your phone — including starting recirculation remotely. It's a genuinely useful add-on for second homes and rentals, and we can add it to most NPE installations.
The Verified Navien Error Codes — What Each One Means
Every definition below is taken from Navien's own documentation. Sub-codes (like E110-2) narrow the diagnosis further — always report the full code.
Error Code E003 — Ignition Failure
The unit tried to light the burner and failed. The most common code on the platform. Per Navien's own diagnostic list, the first checks are whether the main gas supply valve is open and whether gas pressure is within operating range — which is exactly why this code spikes after utility work, a propane tank swap, or an earthquake shutoff valve trip. If gas supply checks out and E003 persists or recurs, ignition components need a professional's meter, not more reset attempts.
Error Code E004 — False Flame Detection
The unit's flame rod reports a flame when there shouldn't be one. A safety-relevant sensor contradiction — the control can't trust its own eyes. Grounding problems and flame rod contamination are classic culprits. This is precisely the kind of code that should never be reset repeatedly: professional diagnosis only.
Error Code E012 — Flame Loss
The burner lit, then lost its flame mid-operation. Officially distinct from E003: ignition succeeded, sustaining failed. Gas supply and pressure top Navien's checklist, along with the intake air filter — a part Southern California garages clog faster than anywhere. Occasional single occurrences after a gas interruption can be innocent; a repeating E012 is a supply, combustion-air, or component problem that needs diagnosis.
Error Code E016 — Overheating of the Heat Exchanger (The Scale Code)
The heat exchanger exceeded safe temperature and the unit protected itself. This is the code that matters most for your wallet in our region. A heat exchanger overheats when heat can't transfer into the water efficiently — and in Southern California, the usual insulation between flame and water is scale. Navien's installation manual is explicit about the stakes: in water testing above 12 grains per gallon of hardness, treatment is required, and "damage caused by poor water quality is not covered under warranty." An E016 on a unit that has never been descaled is a manufacturer-predicted event. Professional diagnosis, a heat exchanger flush if scale is the cause — and an annual descale so it doesn't return.
Error Code E030 — Exhaust Overheat
Navien's official definition, verbatim from the service manual table: the exhaust limit sensor "shuts down the unit when the flue temperature exceeds 230°F (110°C) for more than 10 seconds." Exhaust running that hot means combustion heat is going up the flue instead of into your water — frequently another symptom of a scale-insulated heat exchanger, sometimes a combustion tuning issue. Either way: shutdown by design, professional diagnosis required.
Error Code E047 — Exhaust Thermistor Abnormality
The exhaust temperature sensor itself is misreading — sub-code 1 for an open circuit, sub-code 2 for a short. The sensor that runs the E030 protection can't be trusted until it's tested and, if needed, replaced.
Error Code E060 — Dual Venturi Abnormality
The dual venturi — part of the gas/air mixing system on higher-capacity models — is operating abnormally, with sub-codes 1 through 3 identifying the specific switch state. This sits at the heart of the combustion system: strictly professional territory.
Error Code E109 — Abnormal Fan Motor Activity
The combustion fan isn't behaving as commanded. The fan sets the air side of the air/fuel equation, so the unit won't run without trusting it. Debris, bearing wear, or electrical faults — a technician's inspection sorts out which.
Error Code E110 — Exhaust Blockage
Navien's official definition: exhaust blockage — with sub-codes for when it was detected (1: checking the fan; 2: during hot water use; 3: during space heating). The unit senses that exhaust can't leave the way it should. Vent obstructions (nests, debris, crushed or sagging pipe), a clogged intake filter, or condensate problems are the usual suspects — and because this code is about where combustion gases go, treat it with respect and get it diagnosed promptly. (This is also the code third-party websites most often get wrong — you may find pages calling E110 a valve or air-pressure fault. Navien's own table says exhaust blockage. Trust the manufacturer.)
Error Code E762 — Vent Installation Detector (NPE-2 Only)
A modern-generation exclusive. Every NPE-2 ships with a Vent Installation Detector (VID) — a switch inside the exhaust collar that confirms the vent pipe is fully inserted at least 2-¾ inches. Per Navien's manual, if the pipe isn't fully seated or is incorrectly sized, "the unit will display an error message and will not operate" — E762. On a new installation, this is the unit refusing to run until the venting is right, which tells you something about how seriously Navien takes flue-gas safety. On an operating unit that suddenly shows E762, something has moved or separated at the collar — call promptly. (Navien is equally clear about the VID's limits: it is not a carbon monoxide detector and can't detect leaks further down the vent run — which is why a CO detector near the unit and periodic professional vent inspection both still matter.)
Error Code E773 — Gas Type Discrepancy Warning (NPE-2 Only)
The unit suspects the gas it's burning doesn't match the gas it's configured for. Navien's manual explains this code in unusual detail: it activates when the unit "detects a discrepancy between the gas type set during installation and the gas type connected to the unit." A natural-gas unit configured for propane (or vice versa) produces abnormal combustion — and Navien warns that conversions attempted without the official Navien conversion kit "will result in dangerous operating conditions and will void the warranty." If E773 appears, this is installer-level work: configuration, DIP switch verification, and combustion checks by a professional. Never a homeowner adjustment.
The Other Codes in Navien's Table — and an Honest Note
Navien's factory service manual contains additional error codes — including 407, 421, 432, 434, 438, 439, 441, 515, 517, 594, 736, and 740 — covering sensors, water-flow components, circuit board conditions, and multi-unit (cascade) communication. Here's our honesty policy, the same one behind every guide in this series: we only publish definitions we've verified against manufacturer documentation. Plenty of websites will confidently define every code on this list; several of them, as noted above, are provably wrong. If your Navien shows any code — on this page or off it — call (877) 798-7487 and read us the code and your model number. As Navien Service Specialists, we'll tell you exactly what it means, whether it can wait, and what fixing it involves. That phone call is free and takes two minutes.
The Water Quality Section Every Southern California Navien Owner Should Read
Navien's installation manual contains a table most homeowners never see — the manufacturer's own hard-water treatment and flushing schedule:
| Your Water Hardness | Navien's Guidance |
|---|---|
| Soft (0–4 grains/gal) | No treatment, no flush required |
| Moderately Hard (4–7 gr/gal) | Softener or Navien PeakFlow recommended; flush once per year |
| Hard (7–9 gr/gal) | Treatment recommended; residential flush once per year |
| Very Hard (9–12 gr/gal) | Softener or PeakFlow highly recommended; flush once per year |
| Extremely Hard (>12 gr/gal / 200 mg/L) | Treatment REQUIRED |
And the sentence that gives the table its teeth, verbatim: "Damage caused by poor water quality is not covered under warranty."
Much of our Southern California service area falls squarely in the hard-to-very-hard rows — you can look up your own community in our water quality library. Translation: for most local Navien owners, the annual flush isn't our recommendation — it's Navien's. That's exactly what THE Tankless Protection Plan schedules automatically: the annual Eco-Friendly Descale, inlet filter cleaning, flame rod cleaning, and heat exchanger inspection, performed by Navien Service Specialists, with records kept for the warranty conversation you hopefully never need.
Other Ways a Navien Warranty Quietly Disappears
From the installation manual, all verbatim or near-verbatim conditions worth knowing:
- Freezing damage to the unit or surrounding piping is not covered — relevant for mountain-adjacent and vacation properties.
- Installing without a drain voids the warranty; Navien "will not be responsible for water damages that occur as a result."
- Coastal corrosion — salty marine air damage is excluded unless the unit is protected; worth knowing from Ventura to Santa Barbara.
- Corrosive combustion air — damage from air contaminants is excluded, and Navien's own list of offenders reads like a garage inventory: pool chlorine, water-softener salt (sodium chloride), spray cans, cleaning solvents, even anti-static dryer sheets in laundry areas.
- Unapproved parts and field gas conversions without the Navien kit void it outright.
- Space-heating-only use is not covered.
A properly installed, properly located, annually maintained Navien is a unit whose warranty means something. That's the whole checklist — and it's our checklist on every install.
Frequently Asked Questions About Navien Error Codes
Can I reset a Navien error code myself?
Power-cycling clears many codes temporarily. If it comes right back — or keeps returning — the underlying cause is still there, and repeated resets on combustion-related codes (E003, E004, E012, E030, E110) are the wrong direction. Call with the code and model number.
My Navien shows E003 after a power outage or gas work — is it broken?
Often not: E003's first official checks are simply whether gas is flowing at proper pressure. Once supply is confirmed and stable, a persisting E003 needs diagnosis.
Is E110 really serious?
It's about exhaust — where combustion gases go. Navien's official definition is exhaust blockage. Don't run the unit on repeated resets; have it diagnosed promptly, and keep a CO detector near any gas appliance.
What's the difference between E003 and E012?
E003 means the burner never lit. E012 means it lit and then lost the flame. Same neighborhood, different diagnosis paths — which is why the exact code matters.
Do A2 and S2 models have different codes?
The core table is shared. The practical differences: "A2" models add the built-in recirculation system (with its associated components), and both NPE-2 generations add E762 (vent detector) and E773 (gas type) that first-generation units don't have.
My unit is fine but I want to prevent all of this — what actually works?
Navien's own table answers that: annual flushing in hard water, treatment where hardness demands it, a clean intake filter, clear venting, and a filled condensate trap. That's one annual professional visit — THE Tankless Protection Plan — and it's why maintained units rarely appear in this article's search traffic.
How much does a Navien error code repair cost?
Every code and cause is different. What's always the same: a diagnostic that identifies the exact problem, and your price in writing before any work begins — THE Fair Price Guarantee, on every visit including emergencies.
