What Is a Tankless Water Heater? Instant Hot Water, Smarter Technology
Tankless water heaters — also known as on-demand or instantaneous water heaters — heat water directly as it flows through the unit, without the need for a storage tank. When a hot water fixture is opened, cold water passes through a heat exchanger powered by gas or electricity, and then travels from the tankless water heater, through your plumbing system, to your desired fixture. Since water is only heated when needed, tankless systems eliminate standby energy loss associated with traditional tank water heaters, making them 20-30% more energy efficient.
It’s important to note that while tankless systems heat water instantly, they don’t make hot water arrive at your faucet instantly. The heated water still has to travel through your plumbing system to the point of use. To shorten wait times and increase convenience, some homes include a recirculation pump, which keeps hot water circulating through the pipes so it’s ready right when you need it. In these cases, the system no longer functions as a true “on-demand” setup, since water is being heated and circulated even when fixtures are off.

Our 14 year old tankless water heater had been acting up.
